Set 300 years after the Reckoning, an environmental apocalypse that saw the end of civilisation and the physical world as we know it, The Interrogation of Ashala Wolf is a timely allegory on the perils of humanity’s disconnect from nature.

A new society has arisen from the ashes and its primary focus is to maintain ‘the Balance’ between all life.  In this seemingly utopian but borderline totalitarian world, there are some individuals who have been born with unique abilities.  These so-called Illegals are considered a threat to the Balance and as such are feared, captured and held in detention centres.  To escape such a fate Ashala Wolf and a band of runaway Illegals live in the Firstwood. The story begins with Ashala being captured by the government and subjected to interrogation by a machine with the ability to pull memories from her mind in order to expose and ultimately destroy her Tribe.Kwaymullina, a Western Australian author, cleverly explores the importance of our connection with nature, providing a very bleak picture of where society will be if our abuse of the natural environment continues unabated.  She also touches on other juicy issues such as society’s treatment of minorities, the politics of fear and the ethical minefield of whether the end justifies the means.

With action, suspense, a touch of romance and some interesting characters I found this young adult novel to be a fun and thought provoking read.  Tagged as book one of a series, if you are looking to fill the void left after finishing The Hunger Games give this one a go.
